PROJEKT:
After 22 years in development hell and a high-profile lawsuit between Hollywood heavies, David Gordon Green ("George Washington") has been tapped by Miramax to direct the adaptation of John Kennedy Toole's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Pic's journey to the screen has been just as complex. In 1996, Soderbergh and Kramer filed a lawsuit against Par and Rudin, claiming they were shut out of a project they had long pursued. In 1993, when Par was inking a deal with Soderbergh and Kramer, the studio secretly obtained rights to the book, which, the lawsuit claimed, weakened the duo's negotiating standing. And there were earlier stabs, including Mike Medavoy's attempt to get the project off the ground at Orion with Harold Ramis attached. Soderbergh had also been attached to direct at one point. "I've been obsessed with this book since an English teacher of mine gave it to me when I was a kid," said the ICM-repped Green. "It really captures human emotions and the way they relate to each other, but not in a caricatured way. It's an ambitious step forward." (VAR). PRODFAKTA. Pic will be exec produced by Steven Soderbergh and Scott Rudin. Miramax bought the "Dunces" rights from Paramount in June. The 28-year-old helmer, who is in Los Angeles where casting has begun, will start shooting the project on location in New Orleans next spring.
