FAKTA:

Oskar Schindler 1908-1974. Industrialist, humanitarian. Born in Zwitlau, Germany, now part of Moravia in the Czech Republic. The son of a wealthy machinery business owner, Schindler grew up in a very religious family. A handsome man, he married Emilie Schindler after only six weeks of courtship when he was just nineteen years old. Soon after, Schindler began to abuse alcohol and to cheat on his wife , resulting in the births of two children with other women. Schindler became unemployed when his parents lost their business during the Great Depression and he went to Krakow, Poland where he found work as a machinery salesman. In 1939, after the German invasion of Poland, Schindler bought two previously Jewish-owned factories that the Germans were selling as they prepared to destroy the Jewish population of Poland. To run them, he employed the cheapest labor he could-Jews-and, almost indirectly, prevented his Jewish workers from being carted off to the death camps. In 1942, Schindler witnessed a raid on a Jewish ghetto that changed his motives for employing the Jews. He used the influence he had gained by wining and dining Nazi officials to convince them to allow him to house part of the Plazow labor camp in his factory. By turning them into "necessary" workers, he saved nearly 900 Jews. In the fall of 1944, when the Germans were frantically trying to complete their extermination of the Poland's Jews before the Russians arrived to liberate them, Schindler convinced the Germans to him set up an armaments factory, a business deemed "necessary" by the German war machine. He used 700 Jews from the Grossrosen camp and another 300 women from Auschwitz, thereby saving their lives. Schindler even took those who were sick or unfit for work, and provided everyone with food, clothing, and medical care;
