I loved this movie as a kid, so after several years and a remake, it was time to watch it again. I noticed that I had good taste as a child because I still love it. This movie itself is beautiful, magical as well as cruel and has not lost its charm over the years. The first half to me is very dark and almost depressing, something that I didn't realize as much as a kid. But I guess it brings out Charlie's happiness even stronger when he gets to enter Willy's magical colorful factory, as he leaves his dark dreary grey life. Gene Wilder is excellent as the slightly mental Wonka. It would have to take someone as gifted as Johnny Depp to try to recreate this role. And even then, it is almost a completely different persona. The roll of Charlie is as innocent and as sweet as a child can be, opposed to the other children who are so rotten, you just want to kill them. What is also amazing in this movie, is that it leads you in twists and turns, so much so that you never know what to expect next. In fact if it was expected, one could question the mentality of the viewer. Not to mention the music which will most likey stick in your head. One fun fact on the side: when this movie was first released, some thought that it was a little too much on the freaky side for some children, so most of scary tunnel sequence was edited out. When I was younger I thought that this was the best children's movie since The Wizard Of Oz. In a way I think that they are equal in quality, fantasy and music. Oz has just receieved the age and respect that goes with a quality movie of age, like Gone With The Wind or Citizen Kane. In the question of the Tim Burton remake, I don't even want to compare. These two versions are almost completely different movies all the way down to the title. The both stand excellently and seperately on their own.
